Conway Medical Center (CMC) announced the acquisition of 4 urgent cares and 1 physical therapy clinic from Novant Health. The acquisition includes urgent care locations in Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, and Little River, South Carolina, and will add 43 employees to CMC’s workforce. The urgent care clinics will transition to the CMC brand in stages by November 16, according to the announcement. CMC says the expansion supports the market response to population growth in the area and is intended to improve access to nonemergency medical services while coordinating care across its urgent care, emergency, and specialty services.
Referral base: The nonprofit medical center currently has 222 inpatient beds and dozens of outpatient facilities, and this acquisition appears to mark CMC’s first foray into urgent care. With this transaction, CMC will have more front doors through which patients can enter the health system, which is yet more evidence of the larger industry trend that points toward increasing health-system ownership of urgent care centers.
