The latest annual report on cancer from a collaboration of cancer organizations shows a mixed picture. While incidence is edging upward overall, cancer mortality continues to decline. During 2018–2019 and 2021–2022 study periods, cancer incidence was higher among men than women (504.6 vs 443.0 cases per 100,000). For males, the top 5 types of cancer by incidence are: 1. prostate cancer; 2. lung and bronchus cancer; 3. colorectal cancer; 4. urinary bladder cancer; and 5. melanoma of the skin For females, the top 5 are: 1. breast cancer; 2. lung and bronchus cancer; 3. colorectal cancer; 4. corpus and uterus cancer; and 5. thyroid cancer.

Less smoking:  Cancer mortality continued to improve for both sexes. During 2019–2023, death rates were 171.5 per 100,000 among males (declining 1.6%) and 126.3 per 100,000 among females (declining 1.1%) annually. Lung cancer produced the largest mortality declines overall, and the authors note that since the early 2000s, smoking rates have fallen by about half.
