As markets evolve, urgent care operators often look for unique opportunities to add services that complement care or fill gaps where they exist. In Marquette, Michigan, after a Planned Parenthood clinic shut down, an urgent care operated by a physician entrepreneur has now started offering medication abortion services, according to a report from NPR and KFF Health News. Services are provided by emergency medicine physicians, and 1 of the physicians previously worked at Planned Parenthood. According to the report, the center delivers in-person services for up to 4 patients per week.Â
Preventive care: As more Planned Parenthood clinics close, the patients who accessed appointments for cancer screenings and other preventive services, for example, may have no other nearby resources. Independent urgent cares could potentially create new service offerings to fill those gaps, especially in rural areas where the need may be the greatest. Independent urgent cares led by physician entrepreneurs might be the most likely operators to consider the potential opportunities.
