The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board has confirmed a petition to begin development of the first Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner Certification, through a process led by the College of Urgent Care Medicine (CUCM). In September, a panel of selected urgent care nurse practitioner clinicians and leaders will meet in Las Vegas to begin the foundational work of identifying the knowledge domains, establishing practice standards, and outlining the blueprint for what will ultimately become the certification examination. Subsequent meetings will refine the framework with a goal of having the Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner Certification available in 2027. This credential will be the first nationally recognized certification acknowledging clinical expertise in urgent care, which in the future will also offer employers an objective measure for hiring, onboarding, professional development, and quality initiatives.

Distinguished clinicians: “This certification will provide nurse practitioners with the opportunity to demonstrate advanced knowledge and competence in urgent care medicine,” says Lisa H. Bishop, DNP, MSN, MHA, FNP-BC, CDEO, FCUCM, the Vice President of CUCM. “More importantly, it represents another significant step toward achieving broader recognition of urgent care as a true medical specialty.”
