Incident finding on patients pathology x-ray
Diagnosis: The x-ray reveals a sclerotic bone lesion (arrow). Such a lesion generally represents a more slow-growing insult to bone, whereby the bone has had a chance to react and reorganize. Lytic bone lesions, in contrast, are more acute reactions.
The differential diagnosis of sclerotic bone lesions is represented by the acronym “VINDICATE”:

  • Vascular
  • Infection
  • Neoplasm
  • Drugs (Vitamin D, fluoride)
  • Inflammatory/idiopathic
  • Congenital
  • Autoimmune
  • Trauma
  • Endocrine/metabolic
